Our garden diary:
By 4 th class A
Today we went gardening at the Friary. We met the gardener Jermiah and he showed us around. We saw cool things such as tomatoes and potatoes. Did you know that tomatoes and potatoes are from the same family?? There is a relaxation pond along with a polytunnel. We met their dog, his name is Teto, he is a golden cocker spaniel. Jeremiah told us that you can plant a regular potato and another will grow from that. Jeremiah showed us a potato plant that had blight (the same disease that caused the famine) We met Father James who lives there. Jeremiah told us that other plants can double in themselves, this is known as propagation. We are also designing part of the garden which we have sketched in our hardbacks. The vegetables we saw in the polytunnel were carrots, lettuce, cucumber, courgettes and fruits such as tomatoes and strawberries and there was rhubarb outside along with sweetcorn, broccoli, kale and spinach. The latin for potato is solanum tuberosom.
