Good afternoon students/parents/guardians
A parent had kindly advised that it may be easier to view weekly class workbanks on the school website. To do so please open our website on www.scoilnaomheltin.ie, choose classes at the top of the page, then scroll down to your class where you will see the workbank.
Individual workbanks from support teachers cannot be placed on the website but will be sent via Aladdin.
I watched and enjoyed the RTE School Online this morning. You can watch the show and see worksheets on www.rte.ie/learn from 11am to 12pm each weekday.
Later on today , RTE Home School Extra will air as a catch-up programme at 4.15pm where kids can take over.
RTE will showcase video messages and content by primary school kids across the country in an opportunity for them to reconnect.

We are learning in a very different way and it is exciting and challenging for teachers and possibly you.

If you are having any problems please remember you can contact the school via email on info@scoilnaomheltin.ie

Remember to say a prayer, wash your hands, and be safe

Online Chess Opportunity

3/30/2020

Dear parents/guardians,

Scoil Naomh Eltin has made use of two online chess platforms so that students can engage with chess while the school is closed.
1. The first platform is ChessOssity; an Irish website which allows students to complete chess puzzles and learn the basics of chess. ChessOssity will this week also run an All-Ireland chess puzzles championship for experienced players!
2. The second platform is an internationally reputable website called Chesskid.com. ChessKid will allow students to play other Scoil Naomh Eltin students and others in real chess games online.
School accounts have been setup for both platforms. If your son/daughter would like to be added to the school account of either or both of these please complete the registration form below. Please be mindful that it is the responsibility of parents and guardian to monitor their child's online activity on both platforms.

Good morning students
Your parents/guardians will help you to read this message.
I hope that you are well and that you relaxed this weekend. Your teachers have been very busy preparing work for you.
This morning you will have received your workbank for this week on Aladdin and also in your class section on our school website. . Please try to do a little each day. If you have trouble getting the workbank please let me know. You can send me an email on info@scoilnaomheltin.ie. If others in your house are using the computer or if your computer is broken please do not worry. Instead take time to read, play games with numbers and get exercise in you garden. Most importantly help out at home.
I want to let you know also that RTE are starting RTE School Online tomorrow(Go to rte.ie and chose Home School Hub).  This will run from 11am to 12pm. During this hour teachers will present three short class segments aimed at 1st, 2nd class, 3rd class, 4th class, 5th and 6th class. You will be able to find worksheets on rte.ie/learn.
Later on in the day, RTE Home School Extra will air as a catch-up programme at 4.15pm where kids can take over.
RTE will showcase video messages and content by primary school kids across the country in an opportunity for them to reconnect.

Each day I speak with your teachers who are missing you. They tell me to let you know that you are not to be worried about your work but just to do your best. We will have great fun catching up.

Please remind your parent/guardian that the most important this is to make sure that you are all happy, safe and well.

Have a good week and look after each other

I look forward to seeing you soon

Dear Student
As the weekend approaches I want to thank you and your teacher for working hard during the past week.   I hope that you have managed to get through the work that  you were given.  If not please do not be worried . The most important thing is that you are washing your hands,  helping your family and minding each other.
We will  have lots of time to catch up when we are all together again.
So for the weekend take a break and relax. You have done a good job.
On Monday morning your teacher will send you a new workbank for the week. Please try to do a little each day.
If you are trying to use Mangahigh Online Maths Resource and you have lost your access details then please ask your parent/guardian to email the school on info@scoilnaomheltin.ie and you will be sent new login details.
Finally I want to let you know that your teachers, special needs assistants, school secretary ,school cleaners, school gardener and I are very lonely and miss your smiling faces.
So take very good care, say a prayer and we will see you soon.
Susan O' Hanrahan

Workbanks Monday March 23rd 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian

I have been reading many articles this week searching for answers as to how to navigate on this journey.

I now summarise relevant pieces of information.

This is a really strange time but the following tips and ideas might make the next few weeks at home a little more manageable. Maybe some of them will be useful for you and maybe some won’t work so pick and choose to best suit your children.

While I think it is absolutely brilliant to see so many companies, teachers and other educators sharing ideas and activities for you to use at home, I do also find that it can be totally overwhelming and can lead to parents and guardians wondering if they are doing enough or comparing themselves to other parents. You know your child best – you know what they need and what works best for them so do it your own way. Don’t be under any pressure to complete every single fantastic idea that you see. Pick and choose what you think will work best for you and your family.

This is a scary time for everyone. It’s strange to be working from home particularly as we are not really sure when this will all be over. Our ‘normal’ day to day routines are completely changed. The same goes for the children. This is a tricky time for them – I imagine the initial delight of having 2 weeks off school has worn off a bit as they are not able to just carry on as normal, meeting and playing with friends and going to G.A.A. or rugby or gymnastics. Let them have time to just be kids as they try to make sense of what is happening and process the changes to their normal lives.

Activities/School work
·       Your child’s teacher will send a weekly workbank comprising of 5 days work to you on each Monday morning  during normal school time. Can you encourage your child to complete the work that has been assigned on a day to day basis as if your child were in school.
·       This work will be sent via Aladdin and will also appear on the school website on your child’s class page.
·       Please use this time also to revise what the child has learned already and then maybe give them some challenges based on what they’ve learned.
·       Teach your child ‘real life’ skills – baking and cooking, sewing on a button, putting on a wash, folding laundry, ironing, budgeting, money, telling the time, cleaning etc.

Most importantly I hope that we as a community are doing okay.

On behalf of the staff of Scoil Naomh Eltin I wish each and every family in the school a safe journey at this time

Le meas
Susan O’ Hanrahan

Dear Principal and Teachers,

In the current climate of uncertainty, the Department of Education and Skills appreciates that students, staff and parents are being affected in various ways by the Covid-19 pandemic.

We are equally aware that there are many students and parents in Ireland for whom English/Irish is not their first language.

With this in mind, the Department of Health and the HSE have produced Covid-19 resources in a range of languages other than Irish and English which you can access below:

https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/partner-resources/covid-19-translated-resources/

The languages currently available are Chinese, Italian, Spanish, French, Arabic, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Latvian and Lithuanian.

It is vital that this information reaches the students and parents who need it most. Given the important role you play in your own communities around the country, we are asking you to share this information in a way that is appropriate to your school community.

The site above will continue to be updated with more resources, so we encourage you to check it regularly.

We hope this information will be useful and that it will make important information more accessible to everybody.

Thank you very much for your continued efforts in getting these important messages out there. It is much appreciated.

Thank you so much to all who got involved in Denim Day for Dementia in Scoil Naomh Eltin on Friday, March 6th 2020. We have raised over €675 so far!

This contribution and support will make a big difference in the lives of those living with dementia. Dementia presents one of the greatest population health challenges bother here in Ireland and globally.

As you can see from the photos below, students made the best of their opportunity to look stylish on this day. Well done to all!

A huge congratulations to the Pro Pawns chess team of 8 players who were invited to and finished in first place at the special Féile Fichille chess tournament held at Ovens Hall on Thursday 5th March 2020. The chess team were awarded with an invitation to the special tournament following an outstanding performance at a Regional Ficheall tournament in January and had been spending hours practicing at school and at home since then. The school is extremely proud of the players representing Scoil Naomh Eltin and achieving excellence following their hard work and dedication. The team were greeted on their return to the school with a whole school assembly to celebrate their achievement!

Chess is extremely popular in the school, especially among the senior students. 110 students entered a one-day in-school chess tournament before Christmas. 50 students from 2nd to 4th and 40 students from 5th and 6th have taken part in weekly lunch-time chess leagues. Chess is popular in many schools and is used to build social, cognitive and mental-fitness skills. Most importantly students like the game because its fun!
