Thank you ,This week we were lucky enough to be visited by beekeeper Mark Riordan. Mark specialises in the exciting area of 'apiculture' or beekeeping. Mark set up Hive Mind Ireland over two years ago which allows individuals to make positive ecological changes in preserving Honey-bee populations. Mark spoke to us about the different types of bees within a hive and how fascinating their behaviour is, especially their method of communication through the 'bee-dance'. We were shown a real hive box with all the hexagonal shaped wax inside. Mark showed us hive tools and demonstrated how to start and use the smoker. It was so much fun and we all got a go. Of course we couldn't do all this without trying on the bee suit! To finish up, we tasted natural, untreated honey from Spain, France and Ireland. I think the majority vote was that the Irish honey tasted the best! Mmmmmmmmmmm........... Scoil Naomh Eltin is currently finalising enrolments for September 2017.
