In our Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) lessons, we are learning about how to take care of our bodies. We decided to begin with our pearly whites and what better way to discover the impact certain drinks have on our teeth than by experimenting! We used eggs as the shell of an egg is made of a similar substance to tooth enamel. We used 4 liquids including milk, coke, vinegar and fruit juice. We predicted what would happen after 1 day and after 3 days and got to work. After 1 day of being immersed in each liquid, the eggs covered by coke and vinegar were beginning to stain. After 3 days, we couldn’t bear to smell what was in the glasses as the milk had gone sour and the shell of the egg immersed in vinegar had dissolved. The egg immersed in coke had stained and had lots of cracks and the one immersed in fruit juice had a bubbly shell and was weakened. The only egg to remain healthy looking was the one in milk! A startling experiment which opened our eyes to the real effect drinks can have on our teeth!
