We had a very special visit on the 12th May from the Shannon based air,sea and rescue helicopter. The helicopter landed in Kinsale GAA pitch at 9.30 and were greeted by the junior end of the school, and the senior end followed after. They gave a fantastic talk about all things coastguard related, and they listened and answered all of our questions. They gave us a demonstration of how the lift worked, and wrapped some of our pupils in special blankets that our used to prevent hypothermia, and even got to try on some of the gear! All the children from infants to sixth class were reminded about our emergency numbers 112 or 999. Members of the land based coastguard, as well as local members of the Gardaí also were kind enough to volunteer their time to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
We had such a special day, with some of our pupils excitedly saying that it was "the best day of their lives". Some pupils were chosen to have a tour of the helicopter and even got to sit in the cockpit! As we waved the helicopter off (while holding onto our hats) everyone was blown away. It truly was a special day for all involved and we thank all the volunteers so much for giving us this opportunity.
We look forward to seeing our own pupils in similar roles as pilots, paramedics, navy officers, Gardaí, etc in years to come.
